(Discovering Inspired Religious Treasures)
Exodus 3:14—God said to Moses, “I Am who I Am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I Am has sent me to you.’”
Shakespear penned the famous line, “What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would still be a rose.” I don’t imagine many of you racers buy into that thinking. Names are important to you; names like KTM, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Polaris. Did I forget anyone? We also know the name of the person riding that bike makes a difference as well.
I wanted to share somethings about the name of God. In the original Hebrew it is spelled with the letters yud, heh, vav and again heh. Using the English alphabet it looks like this: YHVH. It is a sacred name; so sacred that some will not even say it. Yet we say the name of God all the time in reference to ourselves. For instance, if you are in a good mood, you might say, “I am happy.” If you come in first and someone asks, “Who was the winner of the last race?” Your reply may simply be, “I am.” YHVH means I AM. God the Creator of all things and the giver of languages has woven into our existence that fact that when we speak of ourselves, we say the name of God. Why did God do that? Because our existence comes from His existence. This gift of life comes only from God.
Identity is important to us. We have come to be identified with a certain community. Usually, the more narrowly defined the identity the more meaningful it is to us. You are racers. You are quad or motorcycle racers. You are dirt racers. You are an AWRCS racer. The last is most meaningful because that’s where family and friends are; that’s where you belong.
Yet, the one descriptor which may be the most generic is actually the most important. You are a child of God. Your life is in Him because He has given you life. Perhaps you have never acknowledged God as your Creator, but that doesn’t change the fact that God has given you life; you are His creation (like it or not). From the Book of Acts comes this treasure: “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything. Rather, He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from any one of us. ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prayer: Lord God, help us to find our identity in You. May Your Holy Spirit move within us so there may be no doubt that we belong to You and You to us. Now and forever in Jesus’ name, Amen.
See you at the AWRCS races
